Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty

Continues To Tour Throughout Hawaii With A Special Screening

At The Waimea Theater on Kauai October 25th

A special Hawaiian theatre screening of  Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty will be held on the

Island of Kauai, October 25th  at 7:30 PM, at the Waimea Theater.

Native Hawaiians Speak Of The Oppression Of Their Culture,

Maintaining Their Connection to the Land, And Developing A Sustainable Lifestyle For The Future

In Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty, Native Hawaiians speak of oppression and the affects of uncontrolled development and commercialization since the US takeover in 1893. Their oral history takes us on a journey throughout the islands to understand that the goal of the Hawaiians is to perpetuate their culture by living in harmony with the environment and maintaining their connection with their land.

“It cannot be separated”, says Master Chanter Charles Ka’upu.

.

In the film the Native Hawaiians articulate their passion for justice and their desire of living in balance with the land. They speak of the ‘Apology Resolution’, a Joint Resolution of the US House of Representatives and US Senate adopted in 1993, in which they apologize for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893, but which the US legal system has interpreted as being merely ‘symbolic’. This resolution has served as a major impetus for the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement and the desire of the Hawaiians to reacquire their land.

Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty is a unique and insightful journey into how Hawaiian sovereignty is imperative to the survival of the Native Hawaiians, their culture, and traditions.

This film received the Audience Award – Best Hawaii Film at this year’s Maui Film Festival.

Catherine Bauknight is a renowned international photojournalist and filmmaker.
