Writing Children’s Picture Books: A Unique Art
by Author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent
Daylong Workshop
Island School Frear Center
When people think of books for children, the picture
book comes first to mind. These delightful, lushly-
illustrated volumes read by parents to youngsters
snuggled on their laps have been a mainstay of the
book business for decades.
Many people have stories they want to tell in this
popular format. Yet writing the publishable picture
book is one of the most challenging projects a writer
can tackle.
Come spend a day with children’a author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent
and learn how to turn your story into a page-turning picture book.
You’ll learn about specifics such as acceptable format and
length and ways of writing that will make your story appropriate for this special genre.

Just around the corner, on the first Friday of December is the Kaua‘i
Museum Craft Fair! The Lights on Rice Parade is back and the County
Building will be decorated to the hilt – all this and more on Friday,
December 5, 2008. From 10am – 8pm enjoy shopping under the tents among the
many artisans, crafters and more on the lawn of the Museum located on the
corner of Rice Eiwa and Rice Street. Inside the Museum are fun crafts to
make, an impressive Gift Shop, bake sale, and more until 6pm.
Entertainment and food are available most of the day up until the parade
at and around the Museum.
The parade kicks off down at Vidinha Stadium about 6pm and rolls down Rice
Street to the County Building. Kmart will again be offering shuttle
service for the Parade so beat the rush for parking. The events are free
